LIV Golf Enters Chapter 11 With Its Next Owner Already Lined Up

LIV Golf's bankruptcy filing arrived with a restructuring deal from BC Partners Credit and a plan for a player-owned league — less a collapse than a controlled handoff away from Saudi money.

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 on Sept. 8, and its next owner was already lined up behind the filing. The league entered court-supervised bankruptcy restructuring in New Jersey four months after the Saudi Public Investment Fund ended its funding, and announced a restructuring support agreement with BC Partners Credit, which is exploring a recapitalization. The figures in the filing frame the scale of the problem.

The PIF is providing $49.6 million in debtor-in-possession financing against liabilities the filing puts at $500 million to $1 billion. At the top of the list of unsecured creditors sits Jon Rahm, owed $7.47 million. The plan on the table is a league in which players hold the majority of the equity, building toward a 2027 season of 75-player fields across five continents.

That structure deserves attention. A league majority-owned by its own players would be a genuinely new ownership model in professional golf — not just a rebranded version of the same PIF-funded project under new management. A bankruptcy filing with a buyer already attached isn't really a collapse.

It's a controlled handoff, with the court process doing the work of separating LIV from the sovereign wealth fund that built it, on terms a private credit firm was willing to underwrite before the ink was dry. Read that way, the filing is less the story of a league failing than of a sovereign wealth fund's exit being engineered through a courtroom instead of a press release, with a credit firm already positioned to take the other side of the trade. It also fits a broader pattern of capital moving toward value the rest of the market hasn't yet agreed how to price.

BC Partners is lining up behind a league in bankruptcy court. The same week, Bank South Pacific signed the largest club sponsorship in NRL history for a team that won't play until 2028, and LeBron James moved from DraftKings to Polymarket, a prediction-market platform whose legal standing is still being argued before the Supreme Court. Each is a bet placed before the outcome is settled, by parties willing to commit before everyone else has agreed on the price.

For LIV, the question now shifts from how much the PIF was willing to spend to whether a player-owned league backed by private credit, rather than sovereign money, can stand on its own. The filing doesn't answer that. What it does establish is that LIV went into court on its own terms, with financing in place and a partner already signed — the clearest sign yet that the post-Saudi version of the league has been planned rather than improvised.

A bankruptcy filing with a buyer already attached isn't really a collapse.

OFF THE RADAR

A record sponsor for a team that doesn't exist yet Bank South Pacific has signed as principal partner of the PNG Chiefs, the largest club sponsorship in NRL history, ahead of the franchise's 2028 entry. A domestic bank in a market of 10 million people paid more than every established Australian club to own the front of a jersey that doesn't exist yet — the money arriving before the roster, the stadium or a single game. A sponsorship paid in operating costs Little Athletics Queensland partnered with SportsLink Travel to run the logistics behind its meets, reinvesting the savings into grassroots programs.

No logo, no media value. A service partner paid in operating cost rather than exposure is the least glamorous structure in the industry, and one of the few that compounds: a jersey patch expires with the contract, while a cheaper travel budget keeps paying back every season.

THE THROUGHLINE

Value kept surfacing where nobody was watching. The bets rewarded were those committing capital, or years of quiet groundwork, to things the market hadn't yet learned to price — LIV's engineered bankruptcy chief among them.
